The restaurant roots come from Tuscany and the ambiance created does a good job setting the scene. It is located at the end of a canal where you can walk along and shop or eat along the way. The servers were all friendly and we even had the back room (about 40 people or so) to enjoy to ourselves.
Getting to the food, we did an assortment of the culatello stagionato e mostarde (very good and flavorful), the puntarelle (refreshing light salad similar to fennel), the tartare di manzo (fresh and excellent), the bistecca alla fiorentina (large and in charge but cooked well), crostini Con pecorino fresco, salsiccia e tartufo di norcia (amazing). To finish off the meal we had some tiramisu (light), the semifreddo alle noci (rich and ok), and macadamia con granella e crema al caffe (it was ok).
Overall, the food was good, atmosphere was inviting and service was great. The prices were fair for the amount of wine we drank and food we ate so I would say this is a good spot to come try should you be in the area.

Il Montalcino brings quality to the table. I had the pleasure of trying the Risotto as well as the Mushroom Pizza and they were both excellent choices (recommended by the waiter)
The location has both outside and inside sitting, and I would say it's more of 2 $$ than $$$$. It's odd but people who sat in the outdoors were smoking, which may affect your dinning experience if you're a non smoker. The staff spoke English and made great recommendations. Overall a solid experience. -

So, a group from our conference arrived at il Montalcino... They would not sit anyone till 8 pm, but that is the fashion. We were quite dissappointed in the food and the service was variable. A lady who may have been one of the owners, was quite nice, but some of the men appeared emotionally uninvolved with the with the operation. I had a Margerhita Pizza, cheese and basil, which was quite adequate, but nothing special. My wife was disappointed in everything she ordered, which is unusual. The Artichoke salad was grey, straw like and had little taste. Her pasta, macharoni with anchovies, scallops and capers was overly fishy, and the tiramisu was unremarkable. Further, although we asked for separate checks, the waiter put one big bill in the middle of 14 diners and we took more than a few minutes and calculators to figure out the payment. It would have been a better experience to go across the street to a Market Place filled with interesting little food shops and stands... We'll know better next time.
